For while it’s true that many Spanish people speak English and enjoy speaking it, it’s far better to arrive prepared than have to spend 20 minutes pointing and gesticulating wildly just to get some salt with your patatas fritas. And so what if you mean to say ‘year’ but end up pronouncing it as ‘arse’ (easily done)? There’s no better way to feel at home in a place than by having a laugh with the locals.
Back home in Scotland, it wasn’t quite so romantic, but I’d got to know my classmates a little better and the hours seemed to pass more quickly. Beats EastEnders any day. (Rachael Street)
