GAY OUTDOOR CLUB

www.gocscotland.org.uk

As summer turns into autumn, nature changes and high hedonism gives way to harvest. Contemplation replaces bright expression, and humanity steels itself for the privations of the low season. The clouds hang low hell, enough of this poetic dreariness! Scotland outdoors is to be enjoyed all year round, and this is the aim of the Gay Outdoor Club. The nationwide organisation has 1,500 members and was established more than 25 years ago to organise fresh air activities for like-minded people, from hill walking and mountaineering, to cycling, running, swimming and more.

‘Traditionally we have fewer activities over the winter months, but this year 600 Edinburgh will be running a series of activities such as mountain biking, skiing at Hillend, and running,’ says the city’s GOC co-ordinator, Andrew Neilson. “We’ll also be planning a few events especially designed to attract new members; for example, a straightforward walk, followed by a meal. We welcome new people to any of our events.’ The next date for the diary is Sunday, 25 September, when the group will head off for a day walk in the Pentlands, climbing up Carnethy Hill and Scald Law, and covering six miles in total.

But why call yourself a gay outdoor club? What makes the club different from other organisations? ‘lt’s good fun!’ retorts Neilson. ‘It allows you to cover subjects [in conversation] you maybe wouldn’t otherwise. And people appreciate meeting in a social atmosphere; 3 lot of the scene is more pressured. The walks are social events.’ They’re better for you than booze, fags and Kylie too. (Robin Lee)

I A full list of act/wiles and contact details can be found on the website. Annual membership costs £7 14 (£19 for couples).
