What is Stewart Lee? Is he a stand-up comedian (from the 905 or the Noughties?) or a controversial musical playwright who hates Ben Elton? Or even an arts journalist who gets himself into hot bother by cracking inappropriate jokes while interviewing leading Hollywood directors? Looks like he’s all of those things these days as well as, if some critics and comics would have you believe, the heavyweight godfather of stand-up.
It was all so different a few years back when he was on a critical downcurve and had hair punky-straggly enough to make him pass for a Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine groupie. Still, to his credit he’s not afraid to admit to having gone through those times, as he includes three brief sketches from 1997 in his new DVD, Stewart Lee: Stand-Up Comedian, one of which (his Diana funeral/ET inflatable skit) even appears in his full set recorded earlier this year at the Glasgow Stand. And there he shall return now with his Fringe show, 905 Comedian. And in the current climate when religion is a bit of a comedy no-no, you can expect lots of blasphemy, a smattering of fundamentalist-bashing and more than a bit about the Blair-Bush duality of evil.
