GIASGAYT'S FIRST COMMISSION

KISS OF THE SPIDERWOMAN Citizens Theatre, 119 Gorbals Street, Glasgow, Tue 1-Sat 12 Nov, 7.30pm (Sat 5 & Sat 12 Nov,

3pm also)

Manuel Puig’s novel, Kiss of the Spiderwoman, is

set in the oppressive, brutal Argentina of the

19705, and puts its two protagonists together in a prison cell. Initially the two men are opposites - Molina is a gay window dresser banged up for gross indecency; Valentin a heterosexual radical Marxist imprisoned for political crimes. Their confinement brings them closer: as Molina talks through his love of old movies, Valentin admits he’s not quite the revolutionary they arrested.

This is the first time Glasgay! has commissioned a piece of work, and it also marks the 20th anniversary of the first stage production of Puig’s book. ‘In some ways, it’s a love story, but it’s a love that maybe can never be,’ says Grant Smeaton, the play’s director and one half of the prison duo. “Because of the situation that they’re in, they have to part in the end. While they’re in that prison cell there’s a developing understanding across the sexual divide, which brings them, ultimately, as close together as they can get.’

Smeaton, whose CV includes puts being artistic director of Tangerine Productions and Hopscotch Theatre alongside work in Taggart and Only an Excuse, has broadened out the setting so it can be applied universally. ‘The topic of political prisoners has reflections in today’s society. It’s been adapted so it can be any political prisoner in any prison at any time - we

didn’t want to be too specific with it.’

And there’s an interesting twist that makes Molina question his identity. ‘Part of the plot is that the security forces are trying to get information out of the political prisoner, and they’re trying to use the gay guy. All the way through you’re not sure whether Molina’s going along with that, or whether his developing relationship with Valentin will save him from doing that. It’s got an interesting tension to it.’ (Robin Lee)
