THE SCOTTISH ENSEMBLE

RSAMD, Glasgow, Fri 28 Oct

First season for artistic director Jonathan Morton, his first time working with cellist Raphael Wallfisch, first visits to new concert halls in Perth and Glasgow . . . the list of firsts for the Scottish Ensemble seems never ending at the moment. And, heaven forbid, just in case there might be thoughts of having a day off, they are about to start a new series of lunchtime concerts

at the RSAMD.

Under the leadership of Morton, who took over from Clio Gould earlier in the year, a chamber ensemble made up of members of the Ensemble will play in the Academy’s Concert Hall on selected Fridays. The series is designed to complement the main subscription series concerts, while at the same time presenting music that, as well as being related, is often somewhat neglected. For the first concert, which will be given by a string quartet made up of Morton and Cheryl Crockett on violins, Catherine Marwood on viola and cellist Alison Lawrance, the programme is inspired by Benjamin Britten. It features his Three Divertimenti, Three Idylls by Frank Bridge, another English composer favoured by the Ensemble, and the String

Quartet by Maurice Ravel.

Those who heard the Ensemble’s performances of English music over the weekend of 7 and 8 October will be in no doubt about the group’s affinity with Britten. Their recording of the Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings with Toby Spence (unfortunately ill for the Edinburgh October date, but replaced at the last minute by the excellent Nigel Robson) is enjoying great critical success. Come December, the lunchtime programme not surprisingly looks to Christmas and will take its lead from Sir John Tavener’s atmospheric masterpiece, The Protecting Veil, which topped the classical music charts for several months in the early 90$.
