It When I’m on my travels. whether it be abroad or Arbroath. I always check out the local fly posters. It gives you an insight into the vibrancy of the local clubs. music and arts scene. Glasgow and Edinburgh have had major crackdowns on postering with serious threats being imposed on venues“ licences and livelihoods. Record companies too have had slaps on the wrists in the eradication of one of the oldest forms of advertising. You cannot fail to escape the ‘Destroy Rock and Roll' poster and stencilling campaign for Skye's biggest musical export, Mylo. You couldn't avoid it, and not just in Scotland — London is still covered in their eye-catching branding. This may have reached saturation point but has certainly helped Mylo become a global star and get signed to Sony.
Many local citizens find fly posting, stencilling and graffiti offensive. but surely there is a difference between ‘Sharon 4 Deek' and a well illustrated graphic design. It has to be policed. as they can't be slapped up anywhere. Things are improving with council-run sites. but these are expensive for small club nights and usually have a massive waiting list. Previous unofficial postering sites are now lying dormant, with really out of date ripped flyers. which I find more unpleasing to the eye than up to date posters showing what a multicultural. cosmopolitan, vibrant country we live in. Cities like Barcelona operate a system where you provide posters to the council and they put them up. as they feel it promotes the city and therefore encourages tourism. Scotland has one of the best music scenes in the world. We really should tell people.
