80 THE LIST

NEV. COMMISSION

COLIN CURRIE WITH THE SCOTTISH CHAMBER

ORCHESTRA

RSAMD, Glasgow, Fri 4 Nov; Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh, Sat 5 Nov

A melody from woodblocks? Unlikely as that concept is, the melodic way in which American composer Steven Mackey writes for unpitched percussion instruments is just one of the attractions of his work for the Scottish-born virtuoso percussionist, Colin Currie. Time Release is a new concerto, composed specially for Currie, after the two got together in Princeton, where Mackey lives. ‘I knew that Steve had written extensively for marimba and percussion and that’s what really attracted me to him,’ says Currie. ‘We had dinner and found we also got on well.’ Mackey was just as impressed by Currie’s formidable talents and deep musical understanding as Currie was with his composing. The result is Time Release.

‘lt’s a blast a really wonderful piece of music,’ says Currie. ‘As well as being thoroughly engaging, it’s very melodic and beautiful. We gave the premiere in the Hague and it went down very well.’ Primarily, the concerto features Currie on solo marimba, a reasonably close relative of the xylophone, but with a richer sound resulting from its lower registers and resonators hanging below its wooden bars. ‘Steve is very adventurous in the way he writes for marimba,’ explains Currie. ‘He uses all of the registers as simultaneously as you can without being carried away. There are chords and sustained basslines and the marimba is also a good pattern and groove instrument, as the timbre lends itself well to repeated patterns.’

Anyone who has heard and seen Currie play - and it really isn’t the same without the visual element - will know that technically he is an absolute genius. Two sticks are in each hand all the time with this concerto, which, according to Currie, is ‘the most advanced concerto I know of. It’s the most difficult thing I’ve played. It really is a very special piece.’ (Carol Main)
