there are more extensive support structures for art. There‘s a similar project that takes place in Paris once a year called Nuit Blanche (White Night). which gets a million people out on the streets from 8pm to 8am for one night. (ilasgow may not he Paris. but what's great about Radiance is that it shows a city that's increasingly dedicated to visual culture.’

So here‘s a breakdown of what's on. what it will look like and where to go and see it.

Light sculpture

Many of the artists and sculptors use or adapt existing signs and create text-based works that spill light and information into the surrounding environment. Ross Sinclair. for example. re- presents political slogans and bureaucrat—speak that asks the viewer what it is to he Scottish. (‘heekily installed behind the (‘ity Chambers. the seat of local government. 'We Love Real Life Scotland' examines nationalist celebration and questions who we think we are as Scots. I’iona Banner also uses neon. reassembling broken and discarded signs to create something taken from the urban environment and given back to it as scarred but beautiful an on Ingratn Street. David Batchclor will be illuminating colourful plastic products and creating surreal chandeliers in Virginia and Miller Street. doing something similar by warping and inverting illuminated street and shop signs in Brunswick Street and New Wynd. After her recent successful show in the 'l‘ramway. Belinda (iuidi continues her expansion of minimalist themes and her interest in film by creating a three—ditnensional glowing text-sculpture out of the title of Italian director Antonioni's film 'l.‘AVVliN'I‘lfR/\‘. The sculpture will be just above street level (the Briggait). claiming the space tnade sacred by advertisements.

Light installation

Another group of artists exhibiting during Radiance will be examining light effects that create (Weds by bringing to life closed spaces and dark alleyways. (iair I)unlop and Dan Norton will be virtually repopulating the disused police box and closed public toilet on Wilson Street (in collaboration with Street Level) in their piece 'Singer (ialas‘. Sans Iiacon at the (‘andleriggs also examines the idea of public and private. of being monitored and wanting to be left alone. where streetlights as spotlights will follow passers by. lighting their way and putting them on the spot. Bough 2 at the New Wynd will install an organic design in inorganic neon. a light sculpture that creeps up the wall and brings life. but not as we know it. to a desolate back alley. At the Ramshorn (iarden on Ingram Street (which contains the graves of many of the original merchants who gave their name to the area in the l8th century) Nich Smith also explores the relationship between nature and culture. life and death. The energy that is needed to create light and life is generated and utilised by ‘The lb’o Iluman (ienerator‘ at Merchant Square. where volunteers will walk. dance. cycle and run in order to power the sprawling installation. Visuals will be provided by Ilextatic and live music played by the Weird Attractors.

Film, video and performance

Light passes through the shadows of bodies in the films and video pieces that will also be on show during the three nights. Torsten I.auschman and Rob Kennedy (with 'I‘ransmission gallery) till a formerly domestic space with multiple 'I‘Vs showing a range of classic movies at 93 Saltmarket. creating something uncanny by overdoing the everyday. Adrian I’aci's delicious projected short film "I‘urn ()n‘ at ()sbourne Street (King Street (‘ar I’ark) records a groUp of men preparing and waiting for the oncoming darkness at the end of the day. The presence. or rather the absence. of the human body can be felt in (‘eal I’loyer‘s video installation ‘Blind' where the pun implicit in the word is developed very little can be seen except the projection of a window blind blowing in the bree/e.
