Music that’s chewy, not chalky

at If you want to get your tuppenceworth on who deserves the gangs at the Scots Trad Music Awards this year there’s still time. Among those nominated are List regulars like Karine Polwart, Finlay MacDonald, Cliar and Daimh. You’ve only got until 25 November to vote though, so get yourself down sharpish to www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/musics cotland/celticrootsflndex.shtml. The possibilities for live music in Scotland are just growing and growing with the opening of the Jamhouse on Edinburgh's Queen Street. It opens on 18 November as a live music venue meets fine dining establishment, and Jools Holland is part of the consortium behind the idea. lt's based in the 24,000 sq ft building which used to house BBC Scotland's studios, and the idea is to combine music and food in the style of US House of Blues venues. We’ll be listing events as they come up but in the meantime visit the website www.thejamhouse.com.

iris If the big cities are boring you stupid and you fancy a trip out of town and some music then head in the general direction of Dumfries for the climax of Burnsong. The event has been running since the start of the year, bringing together songwriters to collaborate and explore the whole idea of Scottish song. From 25 to 30 November there is whole programme of events including gigs from everyone from the Fence Collective and Aberfeldy to Niki King. See www.burnsong.com for full details of the festivities.

They may be rigging up their gear for the SECC this month but Franz Ferdinand have, in conjunction with Beat 106, returned to the scene of the crime Stereo in Glasgow where they had their first live gig. The band will play an exclusive electro set the afternoon before their second arena show on 23 November and while tickets for such a show are unsurprisingly limited. tuning into Beat 106 and listening out for the Arch Duke himself (yeah, we thought he was dead too but that‘s what they said!) and you might just stand a chance.
