STAND—UP CHRIS ADDISON

The Stand, Edinburgh, Tue 6 Dec; the Stand, Glasgow, Wed 7 Dec

Back in August, a multi-coloured tank-top wearing Chris Addison was standing in the Perrier nominees’ holding pen awaiting the midnight hour and the announcement of the winner from the lips of Will Adamsdale (AKA Jackson’s Way). The fact that Laura Solon (AKA Kopfraper’s Syndrome: honestly, can’t these people stick with their real names?) swept away with the big prize after being on the scene for about ten minutes would not have bothered the veteran (relatively speaking) Addison one tiny jot. He appeared cool as a comedic cucumber, and you sensed that while he was arguably the most deserving of the candidates to taste victory, the foppish, thin lad was the one who needed it least.

With a string of rave reviews for his Atomicity show, he had proved himself to be at the top of his stand-up game, which simply added another bow to his existing talents as a TV writer (for the likes of Harry Hill and Chris Evans), a serious comic actor (in Armando lannucci’s The Thick of It) and radio funny man (in The Department alongside fellow satirists Andy Zaltzman and John Oliver). There are very few comics on the circuit who could explore the deeply unfashionable world of textbook science so well, exercising an ability to talk intelligently about his subject while popping off on all manner of tangential diversions to uproarious effect. And if the godfather of British comedy Barry Cryer tells you he’s one to watch, then you better had listen. (Brian Donaldson)
