Box of tricks

Despite the dark undertones and dapper get up, SONS & DAUGHTERS are the perfect act to whip Hogmanay revelers into a frenzy. Camilla Pia explains just why.

rom their mesmerising murder ballads to

that striking rockabilly chic. there‘s no-

one quite like this Glasgow foursome right now. Amid all the art rock bluster and Arctic Monkeys babble. Sons and Daughters have been quietly and consistently knocking out top notch tunes since they first formed: Adele Bethel (vocals/guitar/piano) and David (iow (drums) ditching touring work with Arab Strap to hook tip with ex-March of Dimes man Scott Paterson (vocals/guitar) and Ailidh Lennon (bass/mandolin/pianol way back in the winter of 2001.

After a series of stunning live performances. the

band soon caught the attention of indie superstars Franz Ferdinand who. by the time Love the (‘up

was ready to be released in 2004. had sung their praises enough to generate a healthy amount of

interest in that impressive mini-album. And rightly so: the devilish 'Blood’ or stonning stand- out track ‘Johnny C ash' both still make for spine- tingling live experiences. However. this first effort could only hint at the delights to come in the form of debut LP proper The Repu/sirm Box. released by Domino earlier this year. From start to end it beats and screams its way through ten

slices of infectious pop noir. taking elements of

country. post-punk. blues and traditional folk and twisting them to create something utterly unique.

From the lusty howl of ‘Red Receiver‘ to ‘Dance Me ln"s glittery guitar stomp and the climactic spaghetti Westemesque stripped down epic that is ‘Rama Lama'. the record stands head and shoulders above the majority of indie rock releases this year in musicianship. passion and lyrical prowess.

However. to get a taste of the full Sorts and Daughters experience the live show is a must. Lennon and Gow provide the linger-clicking cool to Paterson and Bethel’s wild abandon as the two vocalists writhe and stamp around the stage. spitting out rage-fuelled verses and wrapping microphone cords around each other the chemistry between them is extremely palpable to even the most unobservant gig-goer. leaving fans physically and emotionally drained after a night in their compelling company.

Nick Cave. Johnny Cash and PJ Harvey are all clear influences on the quartet‘s sound and. on the strength of their past efforts. all signs point to Sons and Daughters following their heroes‘ ability to churn out high quality material that will improve with each release. A lengthy career seems to be on the cards then. and you can bet your bottom dollar that the best is still to come.

Waverley Stage, Royal Bank Street Party, Edinburgh, Sat 31 Dec.
