REVIEW OF THE YEAR

Henry Northmore puts a blade of grass twixt his teeth and reflects on the last 12 months.

It’s been another funny old year in the world of clubs. The indie disco is back with a vengeance with the likes of Gig, ABC, the Panic Room, Club NME, I Fly Spitfires and numerous others leading the charge. It all highlights the continuing trend for live bands at clubs. In fact this retro club style has probably been the biggest winner of 2005.

There‘s been no real 'big new thing' this year. Grime carried on biting at the ankles of the mainstream (with the likes of Lady Sovereign and Roll Deep going on to be bonafide chart stars. and even getting invites to Downing Street). Meanwhile. the cut-up stylings of 2 Many Dds and home- grown weirdoes like Optimo have moved more into the mainstream as the year has progressed.

i. Unfortunately, numbers through the doors have been a problem in the second half of 2005. Remember support your local DJs and the international talent they secure for your delectation. In Edinburgh things could be taking an even worse turn with the imminent closure of several key venues, which will drastically change the city’s clubs landscape.

Personal highlights of the year (again emphasising the move to live acts at clubs) have to be the sublime LCD Soundsystem at Optimo as part of this year's Triptych. You really just can't knock James Murphy and cohorts' sleazy electro and lazy delivery. And London Elektricity's (Hospital Records) spellbinding live show at Manga was a mind blowung mix of heavy funk, drum & bass. rolling beats. MCs and live vocals.

I Club NME at the Art School.

l()pn) 3am. £6 (£5). Weekly (not 3| Dec). The latest addition to the arty roster with live hands and [Us playing electro and indie. ()n l7 l)ec lil Presidente Al'tcrsliow Party as well as live action from Station:Project.

I Death Disco XXXMas Party at the Arches. llpm 4am. £lll (£5). l7 l)ec. Monthly. Sammy Jo (Scissor Sisters tour l)J)_iets in from NY(' for a one off c\c|tisivc set joining locals l)J Moonel‘. ('renie de Menthc and DJ Mingo-go.
