STAND-UP DANIEL KITSON The Stand, Glasgow, Tue 17 & Wed 18 Jan
The List has always had a somewhat fraught relationship with Daniel Kitson. All those five and four-star reviews he’s received from us have clearly never quite sat well with the Perrier winner of 2002. OK, the odd minor quibble has appeared but that’s no excuse for slating us from a live stage for us daring to question whether his extremely high standards may have dipped slightly. But for the record we just want you to know that we love you, Dan. And as tribute to this lover of profound letters, we thought we’d give you a quickfire, cheapshot run through his name.
80, D stands for Denby Dale in Yorkshire from whence he came. A is for Audience, with whom he has a love/hate relationship; don’t even try to heckle for he will destroy you. N could be Nights, the Phoenix ones which brought him to Channel 4 but which appears to remain one of his biggest regrets. I is for Intelligence, a rare commodity on the stand-up circuit, but something he has in spades. E is for the Encouragement he received from his parents by not insisting that he ever got a proper job. L is for London, where he studied drama, the ‘closest thing I could get to doing a course in stand-up’.
K stands for Kitchen, the location for a story he once told about regretful masturbation. I stands for Interview: not too keen on them is our Dan. T is for Traverse, the venue for his 2005 Stories for the Wobbly Hearted. S stands for Something, the magnificent show which deservedly scooped him the Perrier. 0 could well be Onanism (see K for details) and N is for 19705, the decade that spawned him and from where he still retains his maverick dress sense.
