It looks as if this might be your last chance to see this Noel Coward classic in its current form, though you could cross the border and see it in England after 26 March. The reason? Well, like most mid 20th century drama, there’s a good deal of smoking that goes on onstage; it is in fact an absolute necessity to the dramatic action. The central love story revives when Elyot and Amanda go out onto their separate hotel balconies to smoke. With Scotland’s total ban on

smoking extending to theatre stages, this will no longer

happen onstage, and substitutes for the lit cigarette

are, it’s widely agreed, so naff that it’s best to avoid this

kind of work altogether. Farewell, then, Rattigan, Coward, many an Orton and Pinter, and so on. Meanwhile, though, you can see this tale of a love story between two of the most awkward and selfish characters imaginable as this West End production does the rounds. Coward’s bitchy and very witty comedy is perhaps an essay on how one can’t help

loving the people you do, even if they are insufferable.

The battling couple at the centre, reinventing their relationship just after they’ve remarried, has a ring of truth about human sexuality that goes far beyond the upper class folk at the centre. TV familiars Belinda Lang and Julian Wadham will be there to smoke amongst the last ciggies on Scottish stages - don’t inhale, now. (Steve Cramer)
