Stil Jl MODERN LOVERS Ego. Edinburgh, Sat 4 Feb

‘Gigging’s quite easy for me now,’ explains Andrew ‘Whitey’ White, guitarist with success story of 2005 the Kaiser Chiefs, on the difference between using a guitar and a pair of decks. ‘Towards the end of last year it felt like we were banging them out. We did something like 200 gigs, which is an amazing amount. I’m going to be more nervous about doing this, to be honest. l’ve no idea how to work DJ equipment. I know I’m going to play some good records; I just hope I can put them on properly.‘

Despite a little trepidation before his first ever DJ set, Whitey says he’s really looking forward to appearing at Edinburgh‘s premier psych-rock-soul date, Modern Lovers. ‘My girlfriend Nesta knew Craig [Jamieson, founder of Modern Lovers] through going to the club

when she was at university in Edinburgh,’ he says. ‘So when I got asked I thought it sounded like a good idea. I wouldn‘t call myself a collector, but in the early 905 I did have a few thousand 60$ psychedelia and 70s prog records, until I became skint and had to sell half of them. Modern Lovers sounds like my type of music, though. In fact I might have been before, but last time I was in Edinburgh l was far too drunk to remember anything.’

So if it goes well will he return to the DJ booth, either at Modern Lovers or elsewhere? ‘If they ask me,‘ confirms Whitey, enthusiastically. ‘I mean, I don’t want to take it on as a part-time thing, as DJ Whitey or anything like that. I’m quite a lazy person. But some of the other guys will always play the indie hits at aftershows and things like that, whereas I’ll only do it if I get to play the things I like.’ In other words, readers, we humbly predict a riot.
