tlw (ill/)‘J rniirui‘ai at; 'w l“l Peter Hook hardly needs any introduction. Joy Division and New Order helped pave the way for much of today’s electronic dance music. “Blue Monday’ is still a template for electronica. Anyone who saw them at last year's T in the Park can attest they were on fire, reinvigorated and vital. Now the bassist is back manning the decks at Sugarbeat. ‘lt‘s just nice to be able to do something in music that isn‘t New Order,‘ he explains in his heavy Manchester accent.

‘Mani outta Primal Scream actually got me into DJing.

1 Well? Are you? That's what Michael Canitrot, DJ and the man behind the rather oddly-titled Parisian superclub, will be asking on this, the

says Hook. ‘But after arguing with about 25 audiences I gave in and played some mixes that I've either done myself or that weren’t released. I like to think I test them enough to reward them with a couple of tracks that they know. I played “World in Motion" once in Aberdeen and things got a bit hairy - I don‘t know what possessed me, sometimes I forget what continent I’m on.‘

Coincidentally there seems to be a bit of synchronicity at work when it comes to Hook and Utah Saints, who run Sugarbeat. ‘Obviously I'd heard of them, but I'm being educated in them as I happen to be doing a Hacienda compilation CD. I’ve been asking a lot of people I know in Manchester what tracks they used to rave on at the Hacienda and I just found out one was the Utah Saints mix of “Little Bird" by Annie Lennox.’

So expect all kinds of stuff - hard dance, reggae, punk, you name it, as Hook promises: ‘l’ll be experimenting a little on you lot.‘ (Henry Northmore)
