Part of an evening of American Icons. Michael Daugherty's tribute to Elws is a Faustian spin using the Latin Dies lrae as its princupal theme. Seli- proclaimed as the Andy Warhol of contemporary music, Daugherty is inspired by icons of American pop culture. His Metropolis Symphony - the Red Cape Tango from it is also on the bill - is based on the story of Superman.

But the American icons upon which Walker has based his programme are not all tongue-in-cheek. John Adams‘ 2003 Pullitzer prize-winning On the Transmigration of Souls was written in commemoration of those who died in the tragedy of 11 September. 2001 and is described by Adams as 'a musical space for reflection and remembrance. of meditation on an unanswerable question‘ ‘What could be more iconic than the Twin Towers and 9/11?‘ asks Walker. ‘Without wishing to be morose. one could mark it as the beginning of the death of civilisation. It‘s a cataclysmic piece. with a loud section depicting the chaos as the towers fell. The music is so fractured, it's like

listening to a broken mirror.

The range of American icons is wide. Copland’s ballet music for Billy the Kid is, says Walker. ‘an old style icon. It‘s like Western music. albeit very good Western music. It’s superbly written.‘ To close, it's Ellington, big band and orchestra. ‘Whether people like folk music, American music. rock. iazz or a bit of a laugh,‘ says Walker. ‘they will like this concert.‘ (Carol Main)
