For a band who sold so many million records over their 21 -year career, this New York City quintet

were rarely taken as seriously as their curmudgeonly contemporaries - Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer - mostly because they resisted the skulls, leather’n’studs approach to metal and actually smiled in their press shots instead of scowling through shaggy perms. They may be older and wiser now, but their sound is still the template for much of what passes for rock today, as it was their fusing of rap and metal in their collaboration with Public Enemy on a version ‘Bring Tha Noize’ in the early 905 that pretty much invented nu metal - something they were rarely given proper credit for.
