An hour in the company of Jimmy McGovern is never a comfortable experience. Everything from Cracker to Hillsborough and Sunday to Dockers has put the viewer through the kinds of emotional torture that should be a breach of the Geneva Convention. And the opening episode of this latest drama series won‘t let you off the hook even beyond its last gasp. The Street is a set of individual dramas, in which McGovern takes the inhabitants of a single road (in some unnamed northern English town) and focuses on the pain they suffer and the adversities they try to fight against. Sure, there are moments of light relief, but these usually come prior to an almighty calamity.

So in this opener, which zooms in on the families of a frustrated woman and a happy-go-lucky chap, the frothy joviality of the opening scenes of chocolate-induced adultery are slashed away when an unforeseen accident on the street affects the victim's family, those close to the perpetrator and everyone who was a witness. While casting into doubt the loyalties, friendships and sanity of all those near to the scene, it provides some with the chance to clear the air and start again.

While the likes of Jim Broadbent and Timothy Spall are given minor cameos in this opener, which belongs utterly to the flawless Jane Horrocks, you can rest assured that they will be given room to flex their actorly muscles in the coming weeks. Broadbent will play a man who plans his own death to allow his wife (Sue Johnston) to get her just financial rewards while Timothy Spall plays a kindly cabbie whose humanitarian bent eventually lands him in a spot of bother.
