THEATRE MOLLY WHUPPIE

Royal Exchange Studio Manchester. Mon 3 Apr oooo

Theatre is about pretending and Licketyspit make no pretence about it. Their show for three-to-seven-year-olds opens by addressing young audiences on how theatre works. Fortunately it’s a brief getting-to-know-you intro rather than a lecture and we are soon whirling through time as performers Kirstin Murray and Ros Sydney wheel out of each other’s skirts, back through the generations of grandmothers who have passed on Molly's story.

If you saw this show in its original staging by Wee Stories, don't be put off going again, as this revival has a more colourful set than the original, plus atmospheric music from Mary Macmaster on harps and Gavin Marwick, whose fiddle underlines the rhythm of Molly's long run through the forest.

Sydney doubles as a selfish king and a giant rivalling Oz's cowardly Lion in courage deficit. Both provide a lot of panto-like humour. But Molly's the heart of the piece and Murray is splendid (‘She does it better than I did,’ says the role’s creator, writer/director Wrginia Radcliffe). Feisty Molly refuses to be intimidated when she encounters dangers like crossing the bridge '0' the wan hair’ to save her village from starvation.

On the way, Molly learns to look beneath the surface in judging people. And since she rejects cold-hearted King Boris with his gooey treats in favour of Giant Ninian’s veggie crops there's thought for food as well as food for

thought. (Timothy Ramsden)
