Although Historic Scotland.

succeeded in persuading the developers to retain its unique facade. the Old Sailor‘s Ark building on the corner of New Street and C anongate will be pulled down to make way for a five-star. seven story hotel. This will be linked to a conference centre on the north of New Street.

development plans. according to Mountgrange.

Following earlier public consultation. the developer has decided to focus on what it hopes will be an ‘arts quarter'. It aims to refurbish the arches on East Market Street for ‘artists. artisans and independent coffee shops‘.

The spokesman said: ‘We are very interested in developing this quarter and want it to have a vibrant atmosphere. There‘s a genuine committment to attracting the community that was there before.‘ He added that key figures from Out of the Blue. which ran the New Street studios. had recently come on board to help devise a cultural plan. but said it was too early to know how artists would be selected and how much the spaces would cost.

The commercial development also proposes the building of a ‘prestige‘ office block on Jeffrey Street. which would block many of the views of the Waverley Valley. and the creation of a larger convenience store.

The Mountgrange spokesman said the company would do what it could to improve the gloomy.
