CHILDHOOD ohm/1A DAVID MITCHELL

Black Swan Green lS(;(:l)il(3l 0...

David Mitchell writes big books. Not just in size (his last was a whopping 544 pages, this one a mere snip at 371), but in breadth, ambition and impact. Quite deservingly, he has found a way into the Booker panel’s good books with his last two efforts, 2004's Cloud Atlas and 2001 ’s Number9dream, and it will have to be a pretty vintage year for him not to get a sniff at the prize with Black Swan Green. While on the surface, it appears less brave in scope than Cloud Atlas (but then The Mahabharata seemed like Maisy Makes Gingerbread in comparison), the streamlined focus allows Mitchell to force us deep into the psyche of an awkward teenager.

Set in early 80$ Worcestershire, Jason Taylor is a 13-year-old with a stammer (which he dubs his Hangman, choking words and syllables as they struggle for life) and a

family dynamic which is equally prone to getting it all wrong. His sister is set to flee the nest for uni and mum and dad are on the verge of something terrible. But while Adam and the Ants play on the radio and millions of men and women are flung onto the dole, Jason is more preoccupied with fending off the bullies and figuring out what girls are made of.

The scenario is a familiar one, but Mitchell’s telling is both as vibrant and poignant as we’ve come to expect from him. The period detail is spot on, but the themes and fears are a timeless wonder.
