Cover story: Yeah Yeah Yeahs

She looks weird. And that’s because she is weird. At the first ever Yeah Yeah Yeahs gig, singer Karen O made a bloodstained, beer-spraying appearance. Since then, she’s had a fling with Spike Jonze, started work on a film and designed clothes made of duct tape and crinoline. But more interesting than any of this is that Karen O and her Yeah Yeah Yeahs have made a new album that is miles better than their first one (that was already very good). New York has dealt us some good hands over the years, but few so good as its current music scene. We talk to the Yeahs as they prepare to wreak havoc on the Barrowlands, and look at the other hits and misses of New York alternative music. See feature on page 22.
