CRISIS OUT OF A DRAMA Re: Tragic Theatre (543)

My experience of the '(jate'r/ay i iasco' was the same I rirarluated a while ago with a degree in Drama Xi lheatre Arts, and, although at least three of the lecturers at (fiateway deserve to work in a much more supportive structure lin every sense) I also know that they and the rest of the school of drama are struggling because of budgets. managerial vacuums and now liornelessness.
Ms Smagac/s class are the first to make such a big noise about the problems that exrsted long before the building was conderrrned. This makes me really angry at myself for not doing what she (lid at the point where I started to realise what l was going to have to repay tuition fees for. Other students were paying much more than me because they had been encouraged to come up from England or as far afield as Arrrerica. Never did we get to see where this money went and I doubt that they were paying my poor lecturers so much that they couldn't have afforded to bring in some more specialists and provrde functional heating and workspace . . . and texts.
I don't blame any of the staff at Gateway as I know that they tried to do the best given the rather armless scenario they found themselves in and most did a tremendous job of making our last couple of years there successful.
So I hope the people who make the ‘big decisions about the School of Drama and Creative Industries are reading these letters and that they will not be 'rapping' any honest

WHY DEPORT ERNESTO LEAL?
At 8am on 1 May my brother. Ernesto Leal, was arrested and taken from outside hrs home and held at Bishopsgate Police Station wrth a deportation order. He was later sent to Belmarsh Detention Centre.
My brothers long term partner was met as she got out of bed. by up to 30 police officers. who had been waiting in the Muse for much of the night.
Just over two years ago my brother was sentenced to 3- and-a—half years for GBH wrth intent. after a bar fight. He served. on the judge's advice. 18 months and spent the majority of hrs sentence in an open prison. Ernesto was released and electronically tagged for four months and reported weekly as part of hrs probation.
My brother has no previous criminal record or convrctions and this was his first offence. The deportation form states that he Will be deponed to Jamaica.

My whole fairiin arrived in the UK in 1977 as political refugees fleeing Pinochet. We were given sanctuany in the UK and have been given 'indefrnite leave to remain. We have no immediate famin left in Chile and he has very limited Spanish.
Ernesto spent his formative years in Scotland when my family was adopted by the Scottish National Union of Mineworkers and settled in Cowdenbeath. Fife. He lived in Edinburgh for many years and I am sure that a number of List readers wrll remember hrrn because he was active as a club promoter in Edinburgh before moving to London.

Amnesty International has unearthed detailed infoririation about secret CIA ‘rendition‘ flights where “war on terror" detainees have been bundled onto private Jets and flown to face torture and illegal captiVity.
Four particular CIA planes have landed and taken off 41 times at Glasgow Airport and 36 times at Prestwrck International Airport since 2001. Flights from these two airports alone account for the vast maiority of all suspected rendition flights via the UK. People. for example. like Canadian engineer Maher Arar, who was tOrtured for over a year in Syria after being flown from the United States aboard a small Gulfstream let. I saw Coldcut at the ABC in Glasgow. Amazing. and the best thing I've seen in a very long time. because the video and audio was all mixed live. That was the best thing in Triptych.

Underground Sol'ushun I went to Battles on the Friday night and that was excellent. Definitely my highlight. They're an amazing live act: very tight. captivating instmmental music.
