JAM74 KEEPS EYE ON MAIN PRIZE

I The campaigning group JAM74 has submitted a cheeky nomination for the Scottish Transport Awards. The Glasgow community campaign formed eight years ago to resist the proposed M74 northern extension. Plans for this elevated urban motorway, scheduled to be bulldozed through Glasgow’s southside, have been described by one expert as ‘like the heroin addict getting his last fix.’ The group has highlighted consistent failures to reduce congestion, while promoting opportunities for sustainable transport as a basis for regeneration in Glasgow. While unlikely to be stepping up to the podium at the emphatically establishment awards, the group justifies its nomination by citing its landmark victory over the Scottish Executive following a public inquiry in 2004. The inquiry reporter Richard Hickman concluded that for reasons of economic, environmental and social impacts, the M74 ‘should not be authorised.’ The Executive ignored his advice. (AR)

I Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos (pictured) is set to release a book in the run up to the band‘s swathe of summer gigs, which include T in the Park and Reading's Carling Weekend. Sound Bites will feature runouts from the singer’s Guardian food column as well as new recipes, with illustrations courtesy of touring drummer and keyboardist, Andrew Knowles.

I Shelter Scotland is calling on the public to tell them what their idea of ‘home’ means to them, as they embark on a new national campaign. The high-profile campaign aims to keep the pressure on Scotland’s politicians to stick to their promise - enshrined in the forthcoming homelessness legislation that everyone should have a home by 2012. www.she|ter.org. uk/homeis
