SARAH MILLICAN

If you believe the axiom about playing to win being everything, than Sarah Millican might have taken her comedy ball and just gone off home by now. Last year she succeeded in coming runner-up in three tournaments with Tom Allen beating her in both the BBC New Comedy and So You Think You‘re Funny awards while the Funny Women gong was given to Debra- Jane Appelby. Millican may have poo-pooed everything connected with competitions had she not finally scooped the Amused Moose new comedy award in 2005.

Now that all this early career jousting is over, Millican can just get on with the business of being a growing comedian rather than a consistent ‘finalist' and it seems that she has a wealth of support behind her. On the comedy fora (or forums, if you will), the likes of Jason Manford have been singing the soft-spoken Geordie’s praises, though being hailed as the future of British female comedy is a tough old position to fill. Until last year, Millican's talents had been wielded behind the mic while her writing was performed by others on stages in Newcastle and South Shields. Soon, though, she was taking her chances on the circuit’s open spots, wooing audiences with material about the dark side of love and the miserable side - the only side, really - of moving back in with your parents. This is the bit where we say ‘catch her now before she's massive’, while we are told that Millican will be going on tour armed with an abundance of smelly gel pens and a new sponge. Quite a rock’n'roll rider that. (Brian Donaldson)
