REASONS TO GO SEE

1 He’s got the finest made-up name on the circuit Except. as not. Seymour Leon Mace is this northern comic's real name. It COUld have been oh so different, though, as his forename was a toss-up between Horatio. Cornelius and Seymour. 2 You’re not seeing double You might well have seen Mace crop up as the sad stalker Craig in the Johnny Vegas BBC3 dope drama. Ideal. In a twist of casting fortune for Mace, he had his brains blown out only for Craig's twin brother to show up. thus keeping his lace in the show. 3 He has quite an imagination After a few years perfOrming his madcap mirth on the northern club Circuit. Mace braved the torrents of the Edinburgh Fringe with his disturbingly funny lmg/nary Friends Reunited show. in which the many fairly tragic people from within his mind exploded onto the Assembly Rooms stage. 4 Everybody loves a clown And Mace has the background. having toured Japan with the Natural Theatre Company, complete with big shoes and the costume and everything. 5 Not to be confused with All the other comedy Seymours in the world. Such as Seymour Skinner, The Simpsons' Principal. or the Seymours in Little Shop of Horrors and Last of the Summer Wine. (Brian Donaldson)

STAND-UP SUSAN CALMAN

Try and see things from Susan Calman‘s perspective. Not only does this mean looking at the world from under five foot. she also has to face the consequences of a rather big decision. Where many comedians draw upon their barren pre-comedy years by regaling us with tales of the fish factory, Ms Calman has just walked away from a career in law for the world of stand up comedy. Ignoring the wails of every careers adviser in the land. she’s created a steady niche for herself within the Scottish circuit as a confident. self-depreciating compere. and star of shows such as Short Story which sold out at the Glasgow Comedy Festival. Calman appears remarkably calm about the whole thing: ‘It obviously took a lot of thinking about. but I know that I've got a career I can go back to so I really want to

take this opportunity.’

That's a lot of confidence for someone who's still relatively new to the scene, but she’s got good reason for it. Already a regular at the Stand, Calman is becoming best known for her skills as an MC, where her sense of the ridiculous lulls audiences into a sense of security often needed when facing some of the scarier acts around. It's hard not to trust someone prepared to demonstrate their dancing skills while gyrating around like a demented Krankie. Backed up by sweet material about her childhood. and long wait for her first kiss, the overall effect is of someone who wants to be

your quirky little comedy friend.

And leaving law for a career that lays down her dignity for the hordes to trample on? ‘lt’s really exciting and really fun; it's a great buzz. Worth taking a risk for.’ Maybe we should thank our lucky stars that there are a few gutsy performers left. like Susan, who are prepared to jeopardise an

awful lot of your entertainment.
