REASONS TO GO SEE

MIDLAKE

1 They’re mates with the Flaming Lips The live-piece from Denton. Texas were recently invrled to suppOrt the Flaming Lips on tour. The two bands got on swimmingly. no surprise really, because Midlake are purveyors of the same offbeat American indie psychedelia as the Lips. Mercury Rev and Grandaddy. with a splash of 708 folk rock thrown in. to create a sound all their own.

2 They love jazz mags Not those kinds of jazz mags. Despite not sounding jazzy in the slightest. the band formed when they were all Jazz students at the University of North Texas. After realising that Herbie Hancock-inspired iazz~lunk odysseys were gash, they thankfully saw the light and turned to indie folk rock.

3 Earl Hickey is a massive fan Jason Lee. star of My Name is Earl, is a huge fan of the band. championing them, collaborating musically and even directing a video for them. Now that's good karma.

4 They love a weird title The band's debut album in 2004 was called Bamnan and Slivercork. Their new follow-up. The Trials of Van Occupanther, is a kind of concept album about a scientist in a 19th century village. Or something.

5 They’ve made the album of the year so far The Trials of Van Occupanther is getting extraordinary reviews from everyone (including The List) and is already being touted as a contender for album of the year. Quite right, too. (Doug Johnstone)
