SlANl) (JP ALEX HORNE

There are some comics who revel in appearing more stupid than they are. We won‘t name any names here, but the tears of a stupid clown can be on the somewhat crocodile side. Intelligent comedy might be a contradiction in terms, but when it's done right, there’s nothing finer on the circuit. Daniel Kitson, despite his propensity for moping, offers thoughtful sets. Chris Addison, the self-confessed middle class swot, revels in his own grey matter. And Alex Horne espouses comedy with its brains kicked in.

His debut Fringe set from 2003, Making Fish Laugh, was a comedic dissection of the research conducted by some Welsh scientists in the mid- 705 about what exactly gets our funny bones vibrating. The following year’s Every Body Talks examined non-verbal communication and, via PowerPoint presentation and the presence of his less than glamorous assistant Tim ‘Cowards' Key, provided an inventive approach to the interactive stand-up genre. By the time he reached When in Rome in 2005, Home had the multimedia extravaganza down to a fine art, the words ‘high conceptualist' now appearing boldly on his CV.

Having exam papers handed out to the audience on their arrival, Home (with the hapless Key by his side once more) launched into a computer adventure game to heighten our awareness of the ancient Latin language and explore its current potential with some predictable yet hilarious jibes at the Vatican. He even held genuine Latin lessons during his Fringe run. None of this suggests the (mythical) show written on the train during the July journey up to Edinburgh and this year's Fringe will be all the poorer for Horne‘s absence. (Brian Donaldson)
