In advance of the release of Almodovar’s superb 16th film, Volver, this second collection of the films of Spain’s greatest filmmaker spans two distinct periods in an ultra-impressive career. Matador, Almodovar’s fifth film, made in 1985, is a flamboyant fable about sex, death and bullfighting. Starring a young Antonio Banderas, it’s considered by its maker to be his ‘weirdest' film to date and is the film that brought Almodovar international recognition. His follow-up, Law of Desire (1987), is a raunchy, provocative sex comedy sporting a performance by Banderas that aroused the attentions of a certain Madonna Louise Ciccone.
Jumping ahead six years, the 10th film, Kika, is an off-the-wall media satire featuring Almodovar regular Victoria Abril modelling a series of outrageous Jean-Paul Gautier outfits including the infamous exploding chest dress. It was the first of Almodovar’s films to be received badly by international critics, who among other things took exception to the humorous treatment of a scene in which the title character is raped. However, Almodovar's next film, The Flower of My Secret (1995), in which the great Marisa Paredes plays a romantic novelist whose life falls apart, was widely - and accurately - viewed as marking a new maturity in the filmmaking of the man from La Mancha.
