LIVE snow THE JUNGLE BOOK

Edinburgh Playhouse, Tue 18-Sat 22 Jul

Peter Elliott brings new meaning to the term ‘monkey business’. The actor turned movement director has built an entire career around simians, working in the fields of film, television and theatre. Having himself played frighteningly realistic animals in Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan and Gorillas in the Mist, Elliott had some wise words for the cast of The Jungle Book.

‘I wanted them to not just move like animals, but to think and breathe like them,’ says Elliott, who directed Baloo the bear, Shere Khan the tiger and some rather cheeky monkeys. ‘But the animal studies were just a starting point, because if the actors walked around the stage on all fours they wouldn’t be able to sing or dance.

Company's popular musical is still working its way round the UK two years later. ‘The film's a jolly romp with some good songs, but the stage play gets a lot closer to Kipling's story,’ says Elliott. ‘And there are moments where it's like an intelligent panto in the way it involves the audience. It's a lot of fun.’ (Kelly Apter)
