THE PIPETTES King Tut's, Glasgow, Wed 12 Jul

Take three stylish and characterful (okay, and very pretty) young women, give them a clutch of urgent pop songs, polkadot dresses and a few practised-in-the-bedroom synchronised dance moves, and you have a Ronettes or Shangri-Las for the 21st

century.

Formed by their very own shadowy svengali figure Monster Bobby and original Pipette Julia whose shared inspirations included mavericks like the KLF and Joe Meek - the idea was born in 2003, fellow

singers Becki and Rose Pipette following soon after. ‘They (Bobby and Julia) met in a cafe‘. says Becki, ‘where Julia told Bobby, “I want to be exploited". He

said, “Funny you should say that, I have an idea . . I think he had the svengali thing in mind at first, although we all eventually kind of took over - I wouldn‘t describe us as manufactured, but the concept is there and it has been thought out.‘

Having added Gwenno Pipette to the ranks following Julia's departure, the band (technically a septet. if you count their largely anonymous backing players the Cassettes) recorded their first album with Gareth Parton, brother of fellow Brightonians The Go! Team's
