July. But how many of them will be from the perspective of the kids of 7/7? Earlier this year, CBBC launched its first investigative campaign (into child arson) and now it offers us a drama with a difference. It may have been forgotten that London was still celebrating the successful completion of its 2012 Olympic bid when Al Qaeda came calling in the shape of four Yorkshire suicide bombers.
While sirens blare across London and the world grinds to a halt, for some, life goes on, and picking on school mates won't stop just because the city is in mourning: ‘But it‘s exciting innit?’ proclaims the school bully, whose miserable home life hints at some explanation for her appalling attitudes and nasty behaviour. While she is at war with bass-playing Ayesha, it‘s not because she wears a headscarf but because she may have damaged her mobile phone. Indeed, the only moment of blatant lslamophobia comes when a bus driver declines Ayesha and her sister’s custom, suggesting that they ‘take their Jihad somewhere else.‘
Full of excellent detail about children and their priorities and the anxiety some must have felt while being trapped at school as their parents or siblings were caught up in the mayhem, this is what it would be like if Paul Greengrass made an episode of Grange Hill. (Brian Donaldson)
