64 THE LIST

RODDY WOOMBLE

Lemon Tree. Aberdeen. Tues 25 July; Queens Hall. Edinburgh. Wed 26 July: Oran Mor. Glasgow. Wed 2 Aug; University Hall. Findhorn. Thurs 3 Aug.

As The Raconteurs have recently proved, a break from the day job can work wonders. The latest in a long line of rockers to dabble in pastures new is Roddy Woomble. who is set to release his debut solo record My Secret Is My Silence, an unabashedly folky affair complete with acoustic ballads and fiddle and accordion-fuelled jigs. all topped off with the trademark poetic lyrics and ruggedly romantic vocals we have come to expect from the ldlewild frontman.

Recording the album at the beginning of the year with fellow bandmate Rod Jones. David Gow and Ailidh Lennon of Sons and Daughters and such folk luminaries as John McCusker. Karine Polwart, Michael Angus and Kate Rusby, Woomble seems incredibly proud of the final product. ‘Me and John had always spoken about working together,‘ he explains, ‘Rod and I had a few songs we were never going to record with the band and so it started pretty innocently like that. I didn‘t even think it would be an album to be honest but

quite a number of people got involved and it turned into this collaboration. It was a bit like a party or something and a fantastic experience.‘

With plans to finish a new ldlewild record of “noisy rock‘ by the end of the year. Woomble is keen to stress how important it was for him to do something completely different for a while. ‘I think it‘s really healthy for people in bands to have other outlets. Like, on this record, I tried to be more descriptive than I've ever been before and working with new people definitely encouraged me to explore new songwriting themes.

‘lt’s the same with the tour,‘ he adds. ‘lnstead of a rigid rock show which I‘m more used to, the gigs are going to be really loose with a lot of room for improvisation. We're even planning to have different people joining the core band every night, with a few ldlewild songs and covers thrown in.‘

So can Woomble envisage working on a follow-up in the future? ‘Who knows. I'll be concentrating on the band after this tour and it will be at least a year and a half before I do anything else again so by then I might change my mind or be into jazz fusion or bossanova or something,‘ he laughs.
