It was rnterestrng to read Davrd Pollock's hagrography to T on the Frrnge on the occasron of rts seventh brrthday. T on the Frrnge provrdes a healthy antrdote to August's sorry dret of brayrng comedians. but let's not pretend that rts arrival was some krnd of year zero. Planet Pop and Flux were major showcases for contemporary musrc durrng Edrnburgh's testrval season long before any major comrnercral promoter was prepared to take the rrsk. and wrthout them rt‘s unlrkely that T On The Frrnge could have happened. Planet Pop was fOunded rn 1996 and showcased an array of then fledgling artrsts. rncludrng Idlewrld. Snow Patrol. Mogwar. Arab Strap. and The Delgados among others. After T on the Frrnge's arrrval. rts promoters block booked venues. only freeing them up at the last minute — that and a drsgracelul lack of medra coverage made Planet Pops future untenable. Flux began rn 1997 and among the 'iew names'. as Pollock puts rt. who appeared over the next three years. were Pulp. PJ Harvey. Babybrrd.
