FESTIVAL FUN?

The festival is great and fun and there's tons to do and see. But why do there have to be so many people?! It now takes forty minutes to walk down the Royal Mile and yOu come out With 20 flyers in yOur hands and belieVing that some comedy show really is the funniest thing ever to be seen! Love it. (PS. Reginald D Hunter is amazmg!)

A QUESTION OF HATS

Pork pies. boaters, trilbies. and even a sombrero in a folk bar. Maybe I should have a Festival hat. My brother bought me a hat, but it has orange felt antennae, so I'm not sure it would make me look like a thesp. My shamefully naked head thus identifies me as one having nothing to do with the Festival. But this is my town so I don't mind. I've never liked wearing hats anyway.

SMEAGLE-TENT

The sounds of the big band drifted through the windows of the fourth floor nurses appointment waiting room. I think people would be happier if it was always like this. with the opportunity to gaze upon a very large purple udder and not worry about having to go to the doctor. Another thing,

The List,

what does ‘spiegel' mean? I can't disassooate the word from Lord of the Rings.

Everybody else calls it smeagle

anyway. How many of us did German at school?

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Re: Discomfort Food (554/555)

Referring to the book The Omnivore 's Dilemma. Barry Shelby writes that our brain

size should guide us towards a

suitable diet and yet ‘the conundrum that humans face is profound.‘

He also writes about the potential health dangers to cows. and to the peOple who eat them, if cows are fed an unnatural diet. In spite of our supposed intelligence, it seems many still haven't

cottoned on to the fact that we

are not. by nature. omnivores. so there is no conundrum.

If cows are fed a natural diet.

the meat they provide is still bad for us. as animal flesh is not a natural diet for humans.

Even the choice of words used

to describe this diet is telling, referring to 'corn-fed rather than grass-fed beef' (sic) and ‘a farmer who raised it' (ie beef). as if not even recognising that beef has come from a once living, breathing animal. Beef isn't fed; it's the end product! Sandra Bussel

CEASEFIRE CAMPAIGN

As the awful civilian death toll rises above 1000 in Lebanon and Israel, people around the world are seeking a place to voice their frustration and concern. Over the last 4 days. 200,000 people from 148 countries have signed the ceasefire petition. This pressure is working. The global outcry over this crisis has pushed the Ambassadors to the UN Security Council to work around the clock to achieve an immediate ceasefire. Whatever your views on where blame lies for this

It was amazing. I prefer the Scottish pipers . though - the Bulgarian band waSn't really my .‘ I cup of tea.

Lee and Kirsten Students

We came to see a mate in the Shotts

and Dykehead band. Lots of people are here for the traditional stuff, but it's good to hear all the different styles. It's all about attracting bands from all over the world.

Erik

Engineer

I enjoyed the Spanish band (Tejedor) - it was more fun with many different instruments and singing as well.

Bernd

Cabinet-maker

It was a great concert the second half was better for me. I play the pipes so it was good to hear lots of different ways of playing them.

Stefanie and Claire

Graduate musicians

We really enjoyed it - the foreign music was very different and an interesting interpretation. It has been really entertaining and there is a great atmosphere. A real ear opener!
