Gossip, chat and rumour from the gallery floor

I Dundee has managed to get its hands (where does it keep its gloves?) on a portrait of one of its most illustrious forefathers - George Paterson of Castle Huntly by Sir Henry Raeburn. The portrait of the ‘Eastern Prince’ demonstrates Raeburn’s unsurpassable ability to render a likeness in economical, bravura dashes of paint. Paterson, as surgeon and diplomat in 18th century lndia, returned to Scotland with a colonialist’s fortune, bought Castle Huntley in Perthshire, and married an Honourable. The portrait will be on show in The National Gallery of Scotland on The Mound in Edinburgh, before being taken to The McManus Galleries and Museum, Dundee, whose refurbishment is expected to be completed by spring of 2008.

I The Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum acts as host to Radio Raploch's exhibition of the working and cultural history of Raplcch. the most neglected and deprived suburb (right behind the Castle) of the Royal Burgh of Stirling. Raploch will be levelled in the next few years. and has finally been awarded £120 million to fund a much needed regeneration project that will include houses for 900 inhabitants, a health centre and services to meet educational needs. The exhibition will tell the tale of Raploch's industrial past and will hopefully present evidence of decades of governmental neglect as well as a computer generated glossy future.

I As part of Black History Month, Glasgow’s Project Ability presents an exhibition that celebrates and examines ideas of cultural difference. Artworks inspired by South Asian and Islamic influences will be on display, including textiles, prints, photographs and paintings made by young people in various workshops led by the Scottish Academy of Asian Arts (SAAA).
