tu blew minds with his stunning directorial debut Amores Perros - sagely billed as the Latin Pulp Fiction at its time of release but for his third feature he went

deeper and darker to startling effect. A film with a heart, quite literally, at its centre, the characters are frail and the muscle at their centre is far frailer than they might at first think. Terminally ill Paul (Sean Penn) inherits the heart from Cristina’s (Naomi Watts) deceased husband after a freak accident involving born again ex-con Jack (Benicio Del Toro at his beguiling, turbulent best). Their three lives become hewn together in a grim but mesmeric fashion. lfiarritu’s direction is brutal, choppy and emotive and like life itself, the conclusion is never neatly resolved, though the trio’s lives are changed forever.
