DISGRACELANDS

I was at the SECC for the first time to see Paul Simon on Fri 3 Nov. Will never go again. What a disgrace and shame on them for selling 33:30 tickets to that barn where I could not see the stage. And the sound was better in my fiesta. Bad experience.

Re: Arty Covers (563)

What a shame that John Taylor has caused himself unnecessary ‘shock and depression' by completer mistinderstandirig my letter about last month's cover picture. My point was clearly not that Douglas Gordon is in any way unworthy of a List cover. but that that particular picture. presumath chosen from a large selection by a picture editor. didn't do its subject any favours. The possible explanation that a deliberate sul‘)\.rer'sion of media stereotypes might be in progress was suggested by the fact that the artist is manipulating his own face. If this were the case then it would indeed he ‘interesting'. I can only hope that this

Re: Save St Peters Campaign

The f()//()I.rt/lllg is an edrted version of a letter sent to Historic Scotland. and copied to Culture Minister Patricia Ferguson:

We appreciate that the future of St Peter's College. Cardross. is of great concern to Historic Scotland. But despite this. the site has been left unsecured and the category A listed buildings remain exposed to water penetration and vandalism.

St Peter's Building Preservation 'Irust believes this damage. and that of prevrous years. to he a direct result of inaction on the part of Historic Scotland. Your agency's r'eticence to address the consen/ation of St. Peter's College contradicts Historic Scotland's mission 'to safeguard Scotland's historic envrronment and to promote its understanding and enioyment. The historic envrronment means structures in Scotland of historical. girchaeological. or architectural importance.~

SI peters Building Preservation Trust is therefore lodging a formal complaint with Historic Scotland against your agency's handling of St. Peter's.

Despite international recognition of the importance of St Peter's College as an outstanding example of modern architecture in Scotland. the government agency charged with safeguarding our nation's

historic environment has failed to utilise the statutory mechanisms available that may have safeguarded the college in the short term. As a result. the buildings have been allowed to fall into a state of intense dilapidation since their abandonmmit in 1984. This damage may have been mitigated by the enforcement of appropriate statutory repairs notices. which may be pursued by Historic Scotland should the local authority fail to do so.

While acknowledging the complex nature of the

aim of caring for. protecting. and enhancing this historic environment. The prolonged and ongoing process of determining the planning application. which could secure the building's future. and the fact that St Peter's College has been left unsecured throughout this process. has led directly to the continual vandalism and decay of the listed structures ~ structures that Historic Scotland itself placed on the statutory list in 1994.

SHOOTING SOME SACRED COWS?

As 1 rs! readers I thought we should all have a debate on some

envrronmental 'tr‘uths'. Firstly. our cars. Small is good. right? Well here is another argument . . . it's better to drive an old gas gu//ler than a new fuel efficient car. because it uses a lot of energy and generates a lot of greenhouse gas to make our new car. The old one did as well . . . but this was a few years ago and won't be undone by our new purchase. It's called recycling. So keep the old Jag. don't buy a Prius.

Secondly. recycling. God yeah. I'm all in favour of this but hang on: the council wants us to wash our separated rubbish? This is about economics. and not enwronmeritally sound at all. Come on guys. this ain't a good use for water.’

Lastly our consumption in general. Yes. we should save energy. we should swrtch off unnecessary appliances and cycling will help us live longer too. But all our C02 emissions pale into insignificance compared to a volcanic eruption or a really big bush fire and people. these things happen all the time. I realise the carbon issue has turned into an article of faith for many of us. I'm not saying
