More than 20 pieces are currently being exhibited at Sofi’s Bar on Henderson Street in Leith - which is well known for supporting local artists and will all be auctioned off to the public on Tue 5 Dec. All proceeds will go towards funding the local Barnardo’s counselling service, which uses art therapy to help abused children build their confidence and express themselves in a safe environment. Contributors to the project include local artists Kate Green, Peter Griffen, Calum MacDonald and Hannah Bloomfield. Anyone interested in picking up a piece of contemporary art for Christmas should call Sheila Patel at Barnardo’s for more information about the exhibition. www.barnardos.org.uk (AR)

DESIGN FOR LIFE

St Peter’s proposals scoop top award

The 2006 Glasgow 1999 Design Medal has been awarded to interior design graduate Stuart Gordon for his proposals for St Peter's Seminary at Cardross. the iconic 19608 Gillespie and Coia creation. and. more recently. the subject of an ongoing List campaign to find a suitable use for the much-lauded but woefully neglected building.

Gordon rose to the challenge of creating ‘a homely and welcoming environment in which children and young people with life-limiting or life- threatening conditions and their families can feel nurtured and rested'. The young designer drew up plans to redevelop the Seminary into a children’s hospice. which would be split into three functions: in- patients. outpatients and staff areas. combining calming reflective places with creative and imaginative spaces.

Gordon received his medal and a $1000 travel bursary from Peter Saville. well known for his album cover designs for the likes of New Order. Joy Division. Suede and Pulp. Saville used the platform to call for the UK's towns and cities to retain their home-grown design talent.

An exhibition of designs shortlisted for the prize runs at The Lighthouse. Glasgow. until Sun 18 Feb 2007. (AR)
