Given its remarkable achievements, especially the recent pre-Christmas recording of the Messiah that dazzled wherever it was heard, it is difficult to believe that the Dunedin Consort is only now celebrating its tenth birthday. Launched by soprano Susan Hamilton and Ben Parry as joint artistic directors, the vocal ensemble has gone from strength to strength over the years. ‘We had two separate agendas when we first started,’ says Hamilton. ‘1 was from Edinburgh and wanted to come back and live here, but there wasn’t enough work around. Ben had moved here because his wife was joining the SOD, and their then leader, Jim Clark, thought that it might be an idea for us to get together.’ From the outset, the ensemble has been fully professional, some singers being stalwarts of the group from the beginning.
Repertoire is chosen from the wealth that is offered over five centuries of choral music as, says Hamilton, ‘We didn’t want to be pigeon-holed, or compete with other groups. Ben and I had a vast mixture of experience behind us, and we’ve always selected singers who are versatile. People don’t quite know were to put us.’ Parry returned south in 2003, and with musicologist John Butt appointed as his successor, the group’s area of expertise is drawn more these days towards the Baroque. But with highlights over the years such as Amahl and the Night Visitors conducted by the composer, Gian Carlo Menotti, Harvey Brough’s jazz inspired Requiem in Blue filling the Usher Hall with children’s singing as part of an education project, tours to Canada, Italy, France and Spain and working with James MacMillan on a special commission, it’s no wonder that the Consort is firmly established as a transforming force in vocal performance both here and internationally.
