Mary Porter (29) Job

Account Director (Public Relations), Profile Plus

When did you start your job? April 2005

What does your job involve?

Profile Plus is a specialist leisure and lifestyle PR agency. It is my job to promote our clients to their target markets through both the Scottish and national media. Assisted by a team of three, I handle between eight and ten clients, ranging from whisky distilleries to hotel groups.

igiiita‘t‘s the best thing about your job? Every day is different, which keeps things exciting. I also get a great buzz from creating unique or quirky ideas for my clients.

tit/hat me you do beiore you started this job?

I worked in a travel PR agency in London for four years, which was a fantastic learning experience and I developed some great media contacts during my time there. I always knew I would end up back home in Scotland though. Before that I worked in advertising sales for The Scotsman Publications as they have a great reputation for training. It is key that if you work in PR you can sell, as ultimately you need to be able to sell your clients’ products to journalists.

timers best way to a job like yours?

Unpaid work placements at PR agencies are a good way to get experience and ensure that it is definitely what you want to do. Once you have your foot in the door with an agency it is a case of working hard, reading as much as you can, developing your media contacts and absorbing as much information as possible if you do all this successfully it is easy to work your

way up through the ranks.

Why would you recoirimeiid a new business to invest; in :2 23’? em i if); lily?

In most industries there is a huge amount of competition

and a brand, product or service needs to be able to stand

out in a crowded marketplace. PR can help achieve that by communicating your key messages as well as helping you to develop new and innovative ideas which we know will interest the media. Through our contacts we then know who would be the best person to speak to about your story which means we can use time more efficiently and are likely to have greater success in achieving coverage.
