BOOK FESTIVAL AYE WRITE! Mitchell Library, Glasgow, Fri 16-Sun 25 Feb

At times. it might seem like the world of children's writing is a woman's domain. You can barely move in the kids section of a book store without bumping into a whole shelf dedicated to JK Rowling, Jacqueline Wilson. Anne Fine or Lauren Child. And when it comes to the celebrity end of things, the likes of Madonna and Kylie get more than their fair share of column inches. Yet there are plenty of top kids writers out there of the male persuasion and some of them are

appearing at Aye Write!

Dubliner John Boyne (Sat 77 Feb, 4pm) had a New York Times bestseller hit with The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas which is now being turned into a movie by Mark Herman (Little Voice. Brassed Off). London lad Tony Ross (pictured) (Sun 78 Feb, 4pm) has illustrated books for Roald Dahl and Michael Palin and hit paydirt with his work on Francesca Simon's Horrid Henry series.

Philip Ardagh (Mon 79 Feb, 4.30pm) may have found it difficult to celebrate his 40th birthday, which occured on the day the Twin Towers fell. but the success of his writing career has surely brought a smile back to his face. The Eddie Dickens series has made his name, and led to Paul McCartney getting in touch to request help for his own literary career. Meanwhile, John Foster (Tue 20 Feb, 4.30pm) will be indulging in a little wordplay with the wee ones for his Dinosaur Poems. The kids might have to struggle past the adults in the ticket queue for Julian Baggini (Sat 24 Feb, 2.30pm) whose Philosophy of the Simpsons event should stop anyone having a cow. (Brian Donaldson)
