DIALOGUES O7 QFACTOR

Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh, Fri 16 & Sat 17 Feb

Some interesting changes are afoot at the Queen’s Hall. If your usual

experience there is confined to classical chamber music and Edinburgh Festival morning concerts, then the Dialogues 2007 festival of live electronic music - also labelled as qfactor - could bring one or two surprises. There’s a catwalk stage for a start, an eight channel sound rig and, if you fancy a wander, performances in the bar at the same time as

those in the hall itself.

As Dialogues founder and artistic director Martin Palmer says, ‘It will be different in the Queen’s Hall. It’s bigger and more ‘official’ than the Bongo Club, where we were previously. But they are very interested in working with us and letting us mess about with the space.’

‘Some of what is happening is purely pragmatic. By using a catwalk stage we can line up acts along it, so we don’t have lots of changes. And the audience can move around and hear different sounds.’

Started in 1999, Dialogues consists of two days focussing on improvised live music with live electronics. Mr McFall’s Chamber break new ground with a project for electric string trio, there’s tuba and live electronics, which is, according to Parker, ‘pretty cool’, and you can hear quite a lot of drumming. There are two outstanding drummers - the British born but now Paris resident Steve Arguelles and Thomas Stronen from Norway, whose Pohlitz is his first solo album. There is also a day of discussion, hosted by the University of Edinburgh, which will introduce audiences to the specialist work of some of the performers.

‘We don’t think that the Queen’s Hall would do this sort of event normally,’ says Parker, ‘but there is a huge following for this kind of thing and we are expecting big audiences.’ (Carol Main)
