A TIMELY WARNING RE: Engage (569)
I read Andrew Burnet's article 'Tokin' Resistance about the dangers and prevalence of cannabis with total agreement. It's good to see someone taking a stand at last. l worked as a volunteer in an office for years where it was the norm for the staff to take drugs. I objected. but what can you do when you're in a minority? Going by these experiences and those in the article it seems that the enemy is more than just at the gate. The advice contained in the article is a timely warning.

A POLE’S POSITION As the daughter of two Poles born and raised in England. I've always been proud of my family's origin. After the large influx of Polish immigrants into the UK. I couldn‘t help but be excited by the abundance of Polish produce that suddenly became available. However. I recently listened to a debate on a Scottish radio station about Polish immigrants and l was horrified to hear so many people phone in. claiming that Poles were stealing 'our' jobs and should ‘go back to where they come from'. Since then. I have frequently come across derogatory comments about the Polish. Before Poland joined the EU. Scotland was very short of employees in the service sector. which Poles have now filled. We should embrace what they bring with them. Most are over-qualified for the type of work they do here and people in Scotland benefit from learning about another culture. it was the first time I’d seen it but so many of the lines from the movie are familiar. it was great, not at all cheesy.

I really enjoyed it. it was good to finally see it. The actors wear a lot of white eyeliner. which was bizarre.

The show was well cast. well directed and the acting was strong. It‘s part of a particularly strong season at the Lyceum.
Doug. a high voice and tight trousers does not a ‘tvlercury clone' make. lvlika has his own performance and music style. Granted that style is light— hearted. at times fluffy and inconsequential pop. but what is wrong with pop? lt's refreshing to hear something with a bit of /ip. Turn track two l‘Lollipop') up loud and dance like a maniac instead of self- consciously shuffling from side to side. Short of a much needed rock revival. Mika will at least fill the stretch of boredom between the endless indie imitations.

Has anyone else noticed that Edinburgh is in danger of being over-run by groups of annoying teenagers who have ditched the trusted velcro tracksuit in favour of dyed black hair. jeans so tight they look like they've been spray painted on and T—shirts either sporting skulls or stars? Lindsay C
