REASONS TO GO SEE

1 Ils sont un groupe francais plus bon OK. we're not going to keep that up. not with our school- level French. Anyway. for the last ten years. French duo Air (Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel) have. along with Daft Punk. been at the vanguard of Gallic pop and dance music. bringing a continental sophistication and sense of humour to both genres. 2 They’re brainiacs Before they formed Air, Godin did architecture at the Ecole Nationale Superieure d'Architecture de Versailles while Dunckel studied mathematics. Only in France. where pop is the realm of academics and philosophers. is this considered a seamless career path. 3 They’re sexy boys Of course. that 's open to debate. but what's not in question is that the pair's 1998 single ‘Sexy Boy' launched them into the public consciousness. soundtracking a summer and setting them on the path to pop success. 4 Are they just pleased to see us, or is that a symphony in their pocket? The forthcoming album. Pocket Symphony, (reviewed on page 62) features the dulcet vocals of both Jarvis Cocker and Neil Hannon. Hmmmm. nice. 5 They’ve been learning from a master The new album features lots of Japanese instrumentation. including a koto and shamisen (no. us neither) which Godin apparently learned to play at the feet of Shoko. a Japanese master.
