How did you get that job?

Name

Gary McLean, 47 Job

Chairman, The Scottish Hotels of the Year Awards, HotelReview Scofland

When did you start your job? 6 years ago

What does your job inveive‘?

Researching Scottish hotels. Living the life of Riley, but it doesn’t take long for a new reviewer to find out that it’s not quite like that! You’ve to behave yourself, act responsibly, meet the whole hotel team and get the feel of a place, often see every bedroom, eat even when not hungry,

write up a very long article... and be away from home 100 nights a year. I edit HotelReviewScotland.com which is the busiest website guide to Scottish hotels.

We also run The Scottish Hotel of the Year Awards scheme. This year we hosted an event for 500 - the biggest annual gathering of Scots Hoteliers which proved, as always a great evening with the Old Course Hotel in St Andrew winning hotel of the year.

What‘s the best thing about your jab?

Being able to encourage and recognise hoteliers in businesses large and small, be it the management or house keeping. Travelling around Scotland in all seasons... going out to the remotest of places one day and being in, perhaps, a new club the next.

What did you do before you started this job?

I’m originally a chartered designer and worked in brand and new product development, though I didn’t actually qualify until my 303. I kind of got to the point where I had designer’s block. The most interesting thing I’d done was to develop a new vitamin product range. Thankfully, in retrospect, fate intervened and I lost my job, so after

a period on the breadline-most useful for reflection—I started HotelReview.

What's the best way to get a job iike yours?

I do a job that draws on my own genuine interests and passions. In most ways I believe in the ‘you make your own Iuck’ approach to life and work. I had these interests to combine design, writing, Scotland, hotels (having worked in them for seven while at university) and Scottish produce (my grandparents had an Ayrshire farm and farming’s in my blood). I’m entrepreneurial and have had to learn from failure, which hurt at the time. I did set up the business but by the time HotelReviewScotland.com was formed I was just that bit more sussed about those aspects of the job I’d be better keeping my own paws well away from.

Anti finaiiy ~ time off - where wouid yOLt escape to? Iona or Galloway for a break within Scotland. Iona is incredibly beautiful, otherworldly, and has a vibrant international community. Galloway is such an under-rated part of Scotland - Kirkcudbright the ‘artists town’, Castle Douglas the ‘food town’, Wigtown the national book town, Whithorn with all it’s history.

Internationally Florida’s great - that said I just don’t think we have the right to overdo our flying and worry about the environmental aspects. HotelReviewScotland.com has strongly promoted carbon offsets (a ‘calculate your 002’ button right on our homepage for three years) via the ClimateCare organisation.
