The wacky name police will be out in force this night, but they’ve no need to worry as these are bands of genuine garrulous innovators, not one trick pony pretenders. The top slot goes to those who have come the farthest, Chicagoan’s Pit Er Pat, a trio of Tortoise affiliates who do their own Raincoats-meets-Soft Machine trip with gentle dexterity. Fulborn are a tad more frisky; sundry F-ire Collective/Acoustic Ladyland/Polar Bear members push the electronics to the fore of their punkprogjazz slurge. On another tangent altogether are Quack Quack who, despite the unashamedly silly moniker, do rather beautiful circular instrumental shapes on bass, drums and keys. Hmmm. Yummy.
