Many consider Joe Ely the originator of alt.country with his

band The Flatliners, with Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock, back in 1972. They mixed folk, country and rock elements to invent a new genre, before going solo in 1977 then becoming firm friends with Joe Strummer and touring with the Clash in the late 705. He’s still cranking out the solo albums (The Flatliners even reformed in 2004 for two albums) and his live shows are renowned through the world of country.
