Alexander Kennedy speaks to Oliver Gurtler, one of the owners of SouthSide Studios in Glasgow, about the new gallery, the artists that will be showing in it . . . and their pizza oven
Alexander Kennedy Who is involved in SouthSide studios and can you tell us about what you get up to?
Olivia Gurtler I started the studios with JR Ewen after we took over a property in the south side of Glasgow in December. 2005. We wanted to provide affordable studios for artists working in this area and already have 17 artists working in 14 studios. in the first year, we have held many events and shows such as Auspacken (May 2006) a studio artist group show and the Close Project (December 2006). One of the attractions at the studios is the brick oven where we bake mainly pizzas and bread. but everything goes.
AK When did the gallery open and which artists have you been showing? Will you only show artists who work in the studios? 0G The gallery was built in 2006 to open the studios up to the public. and was built literally in a day out of big white rectangle sheets of fridge panels — one of the reasons for calling it the ‘Fridge Gallery“. The first show was called The First Cast and this was opened on the studios first year anniversary and showed work by all the studio artists. The first solo show by a studio artist was Dose by Lyndsey Macleod in March 2007. Our exhibition program for 2007 concentrates on the studio artists. but not exclusively. In November we will have a show by artists from a Manchester studio collective. AK Who will you be Showing next?
OG The next show will be Neil Clements' Paranoid. The preview is on Sat 14 April at 7pm and the opening hours will be by appointment after that. His show takes inspiration from 1970s images of Black Sabbath’s appearance on Belgian TV playing in front of an Op Art stage set as well as images of Bridget Riley posing provocatively beside her work. The paintings analyse various teen influences and are partly biographical.
